It seems the militia (more akin to a National Guard than a standing army or a group of tax dissenters in the thought of the drafters of that amendment) functioned to enforce the United States' rights to collect taxes. The most heard logic for *unregulated* gun ownership has to do with a felt desire to be armed for insurrection against the United States if it should do something tyrannical ... like impose a whiskey tax. If Scalia's Originalism was anything besides a picking and choosing selective fundamentalism, it would follow the long-established distaste of conservatives for interpreting the 2nd Amendment in terms of private gun ownership. Yes, the Constitution has been interpreted by the Supreme Court to grant private gun ownership in the 2nd Amendment by an activist court (as championed by Anton Scalia, not George Washington) but it had nothing to do with Originalism.

What kind of hard work?

It takes the kind that makes you work 80 hour weeks, never have a vacation, or even a holiday, being the CEO, CFO and COO all at the same time because you can't afford to hire any help yet, the kind of hard work that lets you go weeks without having a meal with any member of your family because if you don't get the task managed well, all the family members of your employees won't have a breadwinner any more.

It's the kind where you mortgage your house and your future to create a service that is needed, then find the sales staff, manufacturing/development staff to present the service to customer who, God Willing, will promote your product by word of mouth.

Never actually made payroll for anybody, huh, Ken? Ever think about how that check got into your hands?

Dominic, I don't think a great number of Democrats think that the Constitution is out of date. We do get accused of that from time to time, though. I think we are the ones who think of it as a "living document" which is broad enough to meet the challenges of the 21st Century--if we are up to the task.

I don't understand how a great number of democrats state that the constitution is out of date and it is an "old" document.
An afterthought.

The founding fathers did talk about a federal union of states. This kind of language continued down to the Civil War, which probably should be considered as finishing the unfinished business of the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. It resolved the question of slavery.

But it also brought to an end the notion of a "federal union of states." We had a NATIONAL government, not a federation.

It is significant that in his Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln never mentions the Union or the States. What he does mention--he used the word five times in that short address--is "nation." We are primarily "Americans" and only secondarily citizens of some state. That was once revolutionary; it no longer is.
